Service Description

High School Environmental Science Instructor: Molly Arnold Grades 9-12 Tuition: $45 monthly Supply Fee: $20 per semester Tuesdays 10:40am August 26 - December 9th (No Class Oct 14 & Nov 25) This Environmental Science course explores the interconnectedness of humans, nature, and the environment through the lens of three influential books: The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Students will examine the impact of human activity on the natural world, looking at topics such as food systems, sustainability, and ecological relationships. The Omnivore's Dilemma invites students to critically consider where our food comes from, the environmental and ethical implications of food choices, and how industrial agriculture impacts the planet. Braiding Sweetgrass blends indigenous knowledge and scientific ecology to explore the relationship between people and plants, emphasizing reciprocity, respect, and stewardship of the Earth. Silent Spring focuses on the dangers of pesticides and the rise of environmental awareness, teaching the importance of conservation and the long-term effects of human actions on ecosystems. Through discussions, readings, and projects, students will develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and their roles in creating sustainable solutions. By the end of the course, they will have gained insight into how individual choices, societal systems, and global policies influence the natural world, while fostering a sense of responsibility to protect and restore the environment. High school credit can be issued for this course for transcript purposes. **In addition to the supply fee, students will need to have a copy of each book. New, used, borrowed, physical, audio, digital versions are all acceptable formats.**
